GREAT RIO VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women’s soccer team earned its first Western Athletic Conference (WAC) win of the season, 1-0, over the Abilene Christian University (ACU) Wildcats Thursday at the UTRGV football and athletics complex. .

second striker Amy Hislop scored the only goal for UTRGV (3-11-3, 1-6-3 WAC). First year guard Emma Lööv made a save on nine shots faced. Goalkeeper ACU (4-9-4, 0-7-3 WAC) Lily Foster made four saves.

The Vaqueros played aggressively in attack and defense from the first whistle. Red Shirt Junior Midfielder Cam Dade led the offensive effort, taking three of UTRGV’s six shots in the first half. Dade, second defender Nadia Colon and Hislop put a lot of pressure on the Wildcats in the UTRGV’s offensive third.

At 27e minute, Colon intercepted an ACU throw-in and sent the ball into the attacking third. There, Hislop took control and showed elite dribbling skills to beat a defender, then slipped a rocket shot into a small gap between the post and the ACU’s diving keeper’s hands to put the ‘UTRGV leads 1-0.

The Vaqueros took three shots on goal in the first half, including one from Seppala in the 44the minute. The ACU took four shots in the first half, but none were on target. Colon, second defender Libby Beilfuss and senior striker Jeweleen Reuille helped strong defensive play. Reuille blocked a shot to thwart a good chance for the ACU early in the first half on back-to-back corners.

The ACU were the aggressor in the second half, but the Wildcats shots continued to go off target and the UTRGV defense held firm. Dade and first-year midfielder Alaina Granger came with big moments in the ACU’s offensive third to stop scoring chances. The Wildcats took four shots in the second half and only sent one on goal, but Lööv was up for the challenge. She made a diving save on a close range shot at the 84e minute.

UTRGV continued to play hard even with a second half lead. They took two shots on goal and found the extra effort needed late in the game to hustle and hold the clean sheet to secure their first WAC victory.

The Vaqueros will play their season finale on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against Tarleton at the UTRGV Football and Athletics Complex.
