HOUSTON – Former HBU installer Kayla armer has been named the Huskies’ new assistant volleyball coach, head coach Trent Herman announced Tuesday.
“Throughout the process, it became clear that Kayla was the best fit for our program,” Herman said. “I am very happy to bring her back to HBU. I know she will bring a lot of energy and knowledge to the field and that she will be a strong mentor to our players. I am delighted to bring her into the gym this spring. to have her work with the team for the spring and fall seasons. “
“I’ve had a really great student-athlete experience here at HBU so I’m grateful to be back home,” said Armer. “I learned a lot and enjoyed playing for Trent so now I’m delighted to be coaching alongside him. I’ve been on the other side of coaching and competing against this group so I know the right ones. things they have done, and I look forward to working with them and continuing to develop this program. “
Armer was a starter for four years from 2013-2016 and ended his career as HBU’s all-time leader in assists, placing in the top 10 in Southland Conference history with 5,070 She is the only Husky with over 5,000 assists and ranks fourth all-time in school history with 10.36 assists per set. His four assists totals in a single season rank among HBU’s top 15, including seventh all-time at HBU with 1,331 assists as a rookie and eighth all-time and leading the Southland with 1,320 as a senior. She recorded just the second triple-double in HBU history and the first in over 14 years when she tied her career high with 62 assists and added 11 assists and 11 digs against Lamar on the 1st. November 2016. Armer was a three-time all-conference selection, earning first-team honors in 2016 and an honorable mention in 2014 and 2015. She was also a three-time winner of all varsity conferences from 2014 to 2016 and has was appointed CoSIDA Academic All-District in 2014.
Also notable as a three-year letter recipient in beach volleyball for the Huskies, Armer is tied for fourth in HBU history with 46 career wins. She and Tori Hinojosa are second all-time with 40 duo wins and they advanced to the 2018 U.S. Beach Volleyball Championships.
Armer has spent the last three seasons at ULM, where she was an assistant indoor coach and associate head coach at the beach. In his first indoor season, the Warhawks recorded their highest winning tally since 2015 and a record winning Sun Belt Conference game.
Armer received his BSc in Psychology from HBU in 2017 and MSc in Kinesiology in 2018.
