GUWAHATI: Meghalaya University of Science and Technology (USTM) has received an “A Grade” accreditation rating from the National Assessment and Accreditation Board (NAAC).

The eight-year-old university has been accredited by the NAAC, an autonomous body created by the UGC to assess and accredit higher education institutions across the country and assess universities on a seven-point criterion. This covers key factors such as infrastructure, emphasis on research and innovation, curriculum, and faculty.

The outcome of the assessment was approved at the NAAC Standing Committee meeting on November 3 and will remain valid for the next five years. The highest assessment body for universities and colleges in the country organized a series of meetings with the vice-chancellor, heads of departments, deans and other members of the university. The peer team visited all departments, centers, cells and reviewed activities, facilities and interacted with faculty, staff and students, in addition to reviewing all records maintained by the university.

Expressing his gratitude, USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque said, “I am very grateful to the government of Meghalaya for supporting us and continually supporting us in our efforts. My sincere thanks go to the entire USTM family, our partners, and a special thank you to all the students and their parents. Our vice-chancellor who is a renowned academician in the country supervised the institution. This five-year assessment is based on five batches of successful students.

The NAAC peer team appreciated USTM’s best practices, including its reimbursement policy and village adoption, he added.

This is for the first time in the North East and it is very rare in the country that a private university has been able to achieve the NAAC “A” rank in its first round of evaluation.

USTM VC Prof GD Sharma said: “The accreditation of USTM by the NAAC and the award of grade A is the culmination of the collective and institutional contributions of all USTM stakeholders. As the first private university established in the North East, we have taken a leadership role in promoting best practice in all aspects of teaching, research and administration.

“It is a historic moment for the USTM family to be A Grade accredited by the NAAC. The visionary leadership of our Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque, his commitment and hard work, his inspiration and motivation have been a key force behind this great achievement, ”said USTM University Registrar Dr AH Barbhuiya.

Congratulating the university, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said: “Congratulations from the government of Meghalaya to the chancellor, vice-chancellor, professors, officers, staff, members of the management board, students and to all USTM stakeholders for obtaining an A grade from the NAAC. “

Academic fraternities from across the country and around the world have sent messages of congratulations to USTM for this achievement.
