Thomas Wesley Gooden, Jr., 76, of Hixson, passed away peacefully at his home with his beloved wife by his side on Thursday, September 23, 2021.
He was born on March 6, 1945 to the late Thomas Wesley Gooden, Sr., and Angell Monroe Gooden Guinn. He was a devoted Christian and a long-time member of the Hixson First Baptist Church, where he enjoyed praise and singing in the choir.
He was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University where he earned a master’s degree in education with a minor in music. After graduation, he returned to his alma mater at Red Bank High School as a band principal in 1969. He was both a teacher and principal at various schools in the old Chattanooga town school system. and the Hamilton County school system for over 40 years. years. As many would call him, “Mr. Gooden” spent the last 20 years of his career shaping and educating young minds at Big Ridge Elementary before retiring in 2009.
Tommy enjoyed raising farm animals, especially cows, chickens and rabbits. He loved all types of fishing whether it was on the lake, stream or beach vacation. He did everything he could to never fail to cheer on his grandsons at a baseball or basketball game. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him, but those who remain know that he is healed and enjoying his new heavenly home!
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lynda McConnell Gooden, his son Brian Gooden (Stacy) and daughter Amylee Gooden Hepburn (Clay), and his two grandsons, Aidan Wesley Gooden and Owen Thomas Gooden.
The funeral will be at noon on Wednesday, September 29 at Hixson First Baptist Church with Dr. John Basham officiating, with interment to follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens. Visitations will be held prior to the funeral from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church (HFBC).
Due to immunocompromised loved ones attending the ward, we ask everyone to wear masks.
