Thomas Jackson Barrs III, 70, of Quitman, Brooks County, Georgia, died suddenly at Stone Mountain on March 7, 2022. He was born October 8, 1951. He was raised in South Georgia and moved in Atlanta to attend graduate school after college, but still visited his mother and sister in Quitman on a weekly basis.
Thomas was born to Lois Lee Sims and Thomas Jackson Barrs, Jr. He was the oldest of two children and has one sister, Betty Lee Barrs-Medina, who lives in both Dixie, Georgia and Hialeah, Florida. . He and his best friend and ex-wife, Madeleine Benko Barrs, who was born in Casablanca, Morocco, but currently lives in Madison, Alabama, were also extremely close from the time they met until the time of her death. He was also the proud owner of two cats, Belinda and Kiwi, who will now reside with their family in Alabama.
He was a deeply spiritual and religious man who lived consciously and conscientiously, in a manner consistent with his core values ​​of goodness, decency, community service, love and kindness. God, family and service to others were at the center of his life – and everyone who knew him knew that to be true. Thomas was an extremely resilient, growth-oriented individual who constantly strived to be the best he could be for himself and others. He was a creature of habit and walked five miles around Stone Mountain every day for many years. From birth, Thomas attended First Baptist Church in Quitman, where he was baptized in April 1963. In his later years, he was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Atlanta. He still attended Quitman Church almost weekly when he visited his mother, Lois.
Thomas was a well-educated man and an active seeker of knowledge and truth throughout his life. He received his Doctor of Pharmacy from Mercer University College of Pharmacy, a Master of Divinity from Emory University, and a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Valdosta State University. He worked as a pharmacist for most of his adult life and really enjoyed his career. He also earned a certificate in Jungian psychoanalysis later in life, further demonstrating his deep desire and commitment to personal growth and insight.
Thomas’ father died in 2012. Survivors include his mother, Lois Lee Sims Barrs, and sister, Betty Lee Barrs Medina (Alex Medina), eldest daughter, Kathryn “Katy” Lee Barrs Allen (Patrick Allen), and a grandson, Jackson Paul Allen of Denver, CO; and, his youngest daughter, Nicola Plowman of Los Angeles, CA. Other close relatives include his niece, Adrienne Lee Guerra (Richard) and their 3 children Aly Lee Guerra, Richard Jackson Guerra and Ruben Adrien Guerra of Hollywood, FL; and his nephew, Alexander Christian Medina of Tallahassee, FL.
He also leaves to mourn Madeleine Benko Barrs, his ex-wife and current best friend, as well as his children Adriana Carolina Barrios and Alejandro Barrios Benko. Adriana is married to Omar Joel Sosa and they have three daughters, Sophia Elena Sosa, Michelle Alessandra Sosa and Leah Madeleine Sosa. Alejandro is married to Anna Barrios and they have two sons, Alejandro E. Barrios and Christian E. Barrios. Close family friends Orlando and Ofelia Vargas, along with their son Marco Morales, were also part of the family. Thomas is also survived by his first wife, Susan Hobbs Dods (mother of Katy Barrs) of Valdosta, Georgia.
Another beloved extended family includes the family of Robert and Kathryn Fender, both deceased, and their 3 sons, Rusty, Jeff and Dana, as well as their wives, children and grandchildren.
A private family funeral service was held Friday, March 11, 2022 at Maxwell – Purvis Funeral Home with the Reverend Steve Shierling officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery.
