After a freshman committed suicide at a private university in Punjab, students at the institute staged a campus protest on the same day. As university security guards tried to appease the students, the protests turned violent. Police have also been deployed on campus.

The deceased student was 22 years old, from Kerala and studying a Bachelor of Design at Lovely Professional University (LPU), located in Phagwara, Punjab. The incident happened on the evening of September 20, police said. “According to a suicide note left by the student, he was dealing with personal issues,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Phagwara Jaspreet Singh said, as reported by PTI.

Authorities at the Civil Hospital (where the student was taken) said the student was brought in dead. After news of the suicide broke, university students, including girls, came out of their homes and held up slogans, such as “We want justice”.
