MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — The University of Rio Grande earned fourth place in the 2022 River States Conference Men’s Cross Country Coaches Preseason Poll released by league officials.
RedStorm earned an early vote for first place and 68 points in the vote of the league’s 11 head coaches, finishing one point behind Point Park University (Pennsylvania) for third place. The Pioneers also earned a first-place finish and 69 points.
The only Rio senior on the list is Austin Setty (Fairfield, OH) and the returnees also include second student Danuel Persinger (Glouster, OH).
The key loss for the RedStorm was fifth-year senior Cody Booth, who opted to trade after the spring Athletics season ended.
Head coach Bob Willey’s team opens its schedule Friday night at the Mike Baumer Classic hosted by Wright State University.
Midway (Ky.) University, which won its first title in program history a year ago, is the pick to repeat the feat this season.
The Eagles, who edged Indiana University Kokomo and Rio Grande by one point for last year’s crown, got 84 points overall and seven of 10 votes available for first place. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team.
IU Kokomo, who will host this year’s RSC Championship on November 5, finished second with 79 points and were followed by Point Park and Rio Grande.
The top half of the poll ended with St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) in fifth with 58 points and Ohio Christian University in sixth with 56 points. The Trailblazers made it four different schools getting a vote for first place.
The rest of the poll included Indiana University East, Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College, Oakland City (Ind.) University, Brescia (Ky.) University and WVU Tech.
