Jeannette Evans Williams
April 20, 1938 – December 22, 2021
Columbia, South Carolina – Ms. Jeannette Evans Williams was born on April 20, 1938 in Augusta, Georgia. She was the second of four children of the late John H. and Alice Evans. She left this life on Wednesday, December 22, 2021.
She was educated at public schools in Columbia, SC, and graduated from CA Johnson High School in 1955. She graduated from Benedict College in 1959 and received her Masters of Education from South Carolina State College in 1964.
She was baptized and remained an active young Christian at the Macedonian Baptist Church in Augusta, Georgia, until she moved to Colombia. She joined the Second Nazareth Baptist Church, under the pastorate of the Reverend William McKinley Bowman, and will remain there until her marriage to (the Reverend) John C. Williams.
Ms. Williams’ thirty (30) year teaching career included assignments at Perrin-Thomas and Atlas Road Elementary Schools in Columbia and Lakeview Elementary School in West Columbia. When Richland School District One transitioned to full integration in 1972, she was assigned to the former all-white Satchel Ford Elementary School, from which she retired in 1991.
Wife and faithful partner, she accompanied her husband in his pastorates at Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Lower Richland County, Beauty Hill Baptist Church in Orangeburg County, and Macedonian Baptist Church in community of Blythewood – Ridgeway. She joined her husband to become a member of the Baptist Church of Antioch in Colombia when he retired from the Macedonian ministry.
She was an active alumnus of Benedict College, financially supporting the college and working through the local club of Benedict College and the Benedict College National Alumni Association. She was a “golden soror” (fifty years or older) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, having joined the sorority while still in college. She was a member of the National Education Association (NEA), South Carolina Education Association – Retired (SCEA-R), and Richland County Education Association – Retired (RCEA-R).
She has been active in the Wives and Widows Department of Ministers of the National Baptist Convention of America, Inc. of which the Macedonian Baptist Church is a member.
She was predeceased by her parents, John H. and Alice M. Evans; siblings, Joan Lewis and Benjamin James “Foxie” Evans.
Mrs. Jeannette E. Williams leaves cherish her precious memory: her husband of more than 60 years, (Rev) John C. Williams; daughters, Cynthia D. Williams of Columbia, South Carolina, and Camela W. (Joseph) McAllister of Charlotte, North Carolina; sister, Doris Evans Rumph of Columbia, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Yvonne G. Evans of Decatur, Georgia; grandchildren, Donovan A. Hardy, Sr., Janay C. McAllister, Danielle A. Hardy and Devin M. McAllister; three great-grandchildren, Donovan Aubrey Hardy, Jr., Josiah O. Payne and Zuri Amina McAllister; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other caring relatives and friends.
