Liberty University’s Office of Spiritual Development announced that the 48th Vice President of the United States, Mike Pence, is scheduled to speak Sept. 14 at the convocation at the Vines Center.
This will be Pence’s third visit to Liberty. He spoke at the Convocation in October 2016 as then-Indiana governor and Republican vice-presidential nominee, and he returned in May 2019 to deliver the keynote address for the 46th launch of Liberty.
The announcement was made during the convocation of freshmen and new students Friday morning at Liberty Arena.
“I’m excited to see this fall convocation schedule. Our student body, one of the largest on record, will be able to sample a wide range of Christian leaders who model what it is to be a Champion for Christ in their field,” Liberty Acting Chairman Jerry Prevo said. “My prayer is that our students will take Christ with them into their profession, wherever they are sent. Our Convo guests are just a few of the many examples of what it’s like to serve Christ in all avenues of life.
Other special guests this fall include Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Sears, the Commonwealth’s first female lieutenant governor and first black woman elected to statewide office (October 5); Greg Laurie, lead pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship, and his wife, Cathe (November 11); Christian media personality Priscilla Shirer (October 14); pastors David Platt (September 28), Jonathan Pokluda (October 12) and Ben Stuart (October 26); former NFL running back Shaun Alexander (September 2); pro-life activist Abby Johnson (9 September); and 16-time Paralympic champion swimmer Jessica Long (November 9). Guest bands will include Shane & Shane (September 28), the Sean Curran Band (October 26) and Future of Forestry (December 2).
The program officially kicks off on August 24 with a special worship call featuring guest singer-songwriter Micah Tyler. (See the full program below.)
“Our mission is to Forming Champions for Christ to LU. Therefore, we want every Convocation speaker to be someone who can help fulfill that mission,” said campus pastor Jonathan Falwell. “Our guests this fall will bring great insight, wisdom, biblical truth and encouragement to our students on their spiritual journey. We are thrilled to see what God is doing through the men and women who will share from the stage of Summons.”
Some of this fall’s convocations will have special themes, such as a focus on the local church, featuring area pastors and services focused on hymnology, suburban students and the season of the Advent.
Convocation is the largest weekly gathering of Christian students in the world. The service takes place every Wednesday and Friday at 10:30 a.m. EST at the Vines Center and is open to the entire student body. Most events are streamed live on Liberty’s main Facebook page and the Office of Spiritual Development Facebook page.
