ALTAMONT — Melvin J. Gossard, 94, a longtime resident of Altamont, died at 12:10 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2022 at Parsons Presbyterian Manor.
Melvin Jay Gossard was born to Harold Wilbur and Eula Agnes (Clinkenbeard) Gossard on February 2, 1928 in rural Oswego. He grew up and attended schools in rural Altamont and graduated from Labette County Community High School in 1946. After high school, he farmed and raised livestock throughout his life in ‘adult.
Melvin was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church of Altamont. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and other sports. Melvin has always had a particular love for agriculture. He farmed the same land as his grandparents and parents until his retirement and move to Altamont in 1997.
On August 23, 1946, he married LaDonna Tallman in Parsons. She predeceased him on October 24, 1989. After LaDonna’s death, he married Aline (Blackburn) Snead on November 1, 1991. She survives the household.
Other survivors include a son, Terry Gossard and his wife, Leslie, of Altamont; two daughters, Kay Baum and her husband, Dan, of Neosho, Missouri, and Kathe Schneider and her husband, Jene, of Spring, Texas; one son-in-law, Alan Snead of rural Oswego; 10 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and his wife, LaDonna, he was predeceased by a sister, Genevieve Pearson.
The service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Altamont with the Reverend Greg Garrett officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
