ROME, Ga. (October 15, 2022) – Lubbock Christian University Martins Abamu ended his stint at the 2022 ITA Cup with a win in men’s singles to complete his national championship appearance with a 1-2 record.
Abamu’s win on Saturday came against No. 4 seeded Brennen Cimpeanu of Hillsdale College, Mich., who was an NCAA Division II All-America selection last season and was No. 15 at the national classification by the ITA. He won the match in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) to put his singles record at 11-3 this season.
Abamu, who came to the 16-man National Championship after winning the ITA South Central Regional, opened his game on Thursday against Tiffin’s Ruben Fonga. Fonga won the first set 6-3 and managed to hold off Abamu in the third set winning the tiebreaker to win the set 7-6. Abamu was in bad weather Friday as he took on second seed Alejandro Ibanez Gallego of Barry College (Ga.). The two played one set of their match (Ibanez Gallego won the set 6-0) before Abamu retired from the match.
The event is LCU’s final men’s tennis event of the fall. Their spring schedule has not been announced. Abamu is the LCU’s first qualifier for the ITA Cup and his win on Saturday marked the LCU’s first ever singles win at the event.
