When you look at a map of Leon County commission districts, one of the first things you may notice is the size of District 2. The district covers a large area that stretches from the skirts of Frenchtown to the Apalachicola National Forest.

District 2 is diverse and made up of sub-communities spread over a large geographic area that each have their own unique needs. For too long, District 2 has been on the back burner. Neighborhood needs have been ignored for more “high profile” initiatives in historically more dominant neighborhoods.

The opportunity now is to harness the full potential of District 2, and I, Christian Caban, am committed to making this a reality as County Commissioner of District 2.

District 2 encompasses the west side of Florida State University, the small business community of Capital Circle, Southside, Highway 20, and Woodville. By mentioning these sub-communities, it becomes clear that their individual needs are distinct.

The hyperlocal needs of each sub-community have been largely overlooked. While the “victories” for the district have resulted in sporadic headlines, they have created complacency to meet the critical needs of each sub-community. This has been compounded into the fact that District 2 needs to tackle the foundations of our community, including supporting infrastructure, small businesses, youth services, and the environment.

As County Commissioner of District 2, there is one thing I will hold myself accountable for – giving every resident of the District a voice to ensure their hyperlocal needs are heard and prioritized. Each sub-community making up the district is of equal importance and will therefore receive equal attention.

My mission is to bring renewed attention to District 2. That means prioritizing funding for quality roads and sidewalks to increase safety and mobility. This means supporting and recruiting businesses to create more well-paying jobs and investing in our young people as an investment in our future…and so much more.

I’m running for the County Commission to make sure District 2 gets the representation it needs and deserves. It’s time for District 2 to step out of the shadows and into the sun for the day.
