Rivalry reversal

After losing to rival Berkeley Prep in both meetings last year, Clearwater Central Catholic was rewarded with a resounding 24-7 win in the season opener. The Marauders relied on their experienced offensive line to fight their way through what was an effective running game. And the defense has limited the Buccaneers’ big-play ability.

Indian Rocks Christian coach Mark Buchanan is back for his second stint as coach. Buchanan, who retired in 2017, is back after a three-year battle with cancer and is now cancer-free. His return was a success with the Golden Eagles shutting out Legacy Charter in their season opener.

Packers are rewarded

Largo had lost each of his last three meetings against Pinellas Park. On Friday, the Packers finally overtook their nemesis with a 21-0 victory. Largo did this by staying balanced on offense and making big plays on defense.

Zero tolerance

Five teams — Boca Ciega, Indian Rocks Christian, Lakewood, Largo and Northside Christian — all recorded shutouts in their season openers, which were played on Thursday or Friday.
