July 10, 1943 – September 23, 2021 (78 years old)

HUBBARD – Ellen A. “Punkin” Johnson, 78, formerly of Masury, was received in the loving arms of Jesus Thursday, September 23 at 3:30 p.m. while a patient at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Ellen was born July 10, 1943 to Sharon, daughter of Lewis J. and Kathryn (Quarles) Slocum.

She graduated in 1961 from Sharon High School and continued her education at the Mercy School of Nursing, Canton, where she graduated in 1964 as a registered nurse.

She married Willie Brooks Johnson on March 31, 1965. Together, they founded a family and from this union were born two sons: Brian and Kenneth.

Ellen worked at Mercy Hospital and Cleveland State Hospital, both in Canton. In addition, she practiced in private practice at home for 20 years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Farrell where she was a Sunday School teacher, Holiday Bible School teacher, choir president, church missionary, and active on the kitchen committee.

Ms Johnson was Presiding Judge of D Chamber, Masury (35); as well as chairman of the Davis-Ulp Street block watch.

In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, bowling, attending family sports activities and following Tony Stewart in NASCAR.

To say that she was a special woman is an understatement. She was a woman of strong faith who loved her boys unconditionally. Ellen has always put the needs of others before her own. She genuinely cared about her family, her church, her neighborhood and her friends. She was really special.

Survivors include her husband, Willie; his sons the Rev. Brian K. Johnson, Sr. (Crystal) of Hubbard, and Kenneth Johnson (Susan) of Masury; grandchildren Brian Johnson Jr., Antoine Springs, Halston Harper, Zion Harper, Mitchell Bartz and Brittney Springs; his great-grandson, Atlas Springs; his half-brothers James White and Rosie Mitchell (both of Columbus); his goddaughter, Shanice; and his extended family.

Her parents predeceased her.

Family and friends are invited to share a time of gathering at First Baptist Church, 1120 Darr Avenue, Farrell on Thursday, September 30 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday, October 1 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Honoring Ms Johnson will begin at 11 a.m. in the church, where Reverend Robert Simpson will officiate and her son, Reverend Brian Johnson, Sr., will praise. As suggested by his family, those in attendance are encouraged to wear a mask or face covering. Briceland Funeral Service will take care of the arrangements.

Expressions of sympathy can be left with his family at www.bricelandfuneralservice.com
