Gonzales spent 29 years teaching in Texas, 21 of them at Plainview ISD. He took over the management of the group in April 2009.

The Powerhouse of the Plains Marching Band has indeed been what its name suggests – a powerhouse. The group has a long tradition of steadily advancing in competitions each year, showcasing the talents of its members as well as its directors and Gonzales was one of them.

His departure was officially announced to the Plainview ISD School Board at a regular meeting Thursday evening.

“He is moving to Clovis, New Mexico to care for his aging parents,” Superintendent HT Sanchez said.

Gonzales, recognized by his students as “Mr. G,” retired to Texas but will continue to teach in New Mexico, he said.

In his post, Gonzales said he had accepted a position as vice-group principal for Clovis High School.

Gonzales grew up in Clovis, so this move is like coming home.

Sanchez said that Tim Kelley will become the new director of the PHS group. He is a former band leader from Wayland Baptist University and is expected to bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to continue the PHS Band’s tradition of excellence.

“We appreciate everything Mr. Gonzales has done for the kids,” Sanchez said.
