“The Awakening of an American Soldier: An Anthology of Poetry and Prose”: a serious reflection on the ups, downs and in-betweens of life. “An American Soldier’s Awakening: Anthology of Poetry and Prose” is the creation of LTC published author Nina R. Petrarca, USA, Ret., a loving mother and grandmother who has a bachelor’s degree in nursing and general studies from Rhode Island College, Providence, Rhode Island, and pursued advanced studies in global health at George Washington University, Washington, DC. She is currently pursuing graduate studies in political science at the United States Military University in Charles Town, West Virginia. LTC Petrarca, USA, Ret. is a United States Army Nurse Corps officer who also served in the United States Marine Corps, Air National Guard, and Army Reserve during her military career.

LTC Petrarca, USA, Ret. shares: “Never could I have imagined the seat of emotions overwhelming me as my military career came to a halt. I was dealing with psychological warfare that had become my badge of honor over the years. Standard military tactics had no place at this point, and I was well outside my comfort zone. As a female warrior, my life to date existed outside the norms of conventional thought and I was embarking on uncharted territory. I have always found comfort in working with my military colleagues to undertake the mission at hand; in fact, it had become second nature. In retirement, I no longer had a foothold in preserving our American Constitution or protecting our republic from enemies, foreign or domestic. I could not understand the perplexities of this new journey.

“My faith in God has always been my armor of strength and courage, so why would it be any different now? This time the enemy resided within me and I had no escape. I was alone with my thoughts and I had nowhere to go. Through self-reflection, it became clear that the most effective way to get through this quagmire was to stay close to my faith and acknowledge my feelings in a deliberate and meaningful way. I have always been analytical in nature, and from an early age I discovered that the arts could bring calm in the face of feelings of hopelessness. Over time, I discovered that writing slowed down the racing of my thoughts and took back control of my well-being. As my introspective reasoning became manageable, prose evolved into poetry, my darkness began to illuminate, and healing would learn to reside within me.

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, LTC Nina R. Petrarca, USA, the new book by Ret. is a compelling look at the author’s journey of coping with post-traumatic stress disorder after the loss of her ten-year-old daughter to brain cancer and managing the medical care of wounded warriors throughout the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The personal journey of retired LTC Nina R. Petrarca, USA, will resonate with many who have found themselves at a crossroads.
